Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) Reading Order

The mysterious Monitor has been arming super-villains for months, increasing the threats the heroes have been facing. Now the multiverse is dying and the heroes face the ultimate threat. The constant division in the multiverse has made it too weak and the shadow of a menace the likes of which they’ve never faced before looms large on the horizon. Will even the combined might of the heroes of Earth-One, Earth-Two, Earth-Four, Earth-S, Earth-X and more be enough to stop the end of all reality?

The first major event from DC Comics would completely reframe the DC Universe, giving new readers a chance to jump into a far-less confusing continuity. Or that was the plan…

40 years on, Crisis on Infinite Earths is still an crossover event that all other DC events are compared to. Set in motion by Marv Wolfman – sowing seeds in a number of DC titles since 1982, the Crisis to end all Crises was led by a 12-issue mini-series featuring stellar art by George Pérez, with numerous tie-in issues.

If you want to hear our take on Crisis, watch/listen to our BREAKING DOWN CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS podcast episode.

Major Event: With a primary mini-series and numerous related tie-ins, Crisis on Infinite Earths is considered to be one of the biggest events in the history of the DC Universe. If you want to keep things as simple as possible, just stick to Crisis on Infinite Earths #1-12 and you’ll do just fine!

Must-Reads: The essential chapters are included in bold in the Core List and include a ✔ in the Full Reading Order and Fallout sections.

Anthology Issues: When an issue contains multiple stories, the relevant story is denoted with square brackets. For example, [2/5] refers to the second story of the five stories in that issue.

Red Skies: A number of crossover and tie-in issues only feature the red skies and resulting weather or similar blink-and-you’ll-miss-it elements – these include Batman #389-391, Detective Comics #556-558, Omega Men #26, Vigilante #22, Warlord #97-98 and Wonder Woman #327; other loose tie-ins and crossover issues include DC Comics #78, Losers Special #1 and Omega Men #26.

Shadow War: The tie-ins that also impact Hawkman’s ‘Shadow War’ storyline are anomalous in that they arguably take place in both Earth-One and Earth-85 continuities.

Spoilers: The issue descriptions and fallout section contain spoilers, so be warned!

Crisis on Infinite Earths #12
Aboard Brainiac’s ship, Rip Hunter and he’s allies notice the Earth has vanished from the ship’s monitors. Despite not recalling the battle against the Anti-Monitor, Brainiac agrees to help this band of humans, taking them to Darkseid on Apokalips. In the Anti-Matter Universe, the Anti-Monitor announces New Earth will die, just like the Flash did, and sends his Shadow Demons across the planet. Bug-Eyed BanditClayface (Matthew Hagen), DoveLori LemarisPrince Ra-ManSunburst and Kole of Earth-One, as well as Earth-Two’s Green Arrow, Huntress and Robin are among those slain by the Demons. At the Tower of Fate in Salem, Alan Scott and Doctor Occult channel the power of a host of magic-users and imprison the Shadow Demons in a mystic cage in space. Harbinger takes a number of heroes to Qward, where Kid Flash finds the Flash’s costume and ring, as well as the Psycho-Pirate. The recharged Anti-Monitor appears before them! Alexander Luthor begins draining the Anti-Monitor’s anti-matter energy while Negative Woman burns the creature with her radioactive touch. Doctor Light absorbs the power of a binary star and unleashes it at the Anti-Monitor, felling him. As New Earth is returned to the positive matter universe by Alexander Luther, the caged Shadow Demons are drawn to the Anti-Monitor who rises again. However, the magic has warped the demons’ power and they’re killing him. The Anti-Monitor kills Earth-One’s Wonder Woman. Earth-One’s Superman and Superboy-Prime stay behind to hold back the dying villain as the portal closes. Using Alexander Luthor as a conduit, Darkseid blasts the Anti-Monitor into the binary star. When he comes out again, Superman’s punch sends him back to the star, causing shockwaves that will wipe out the whole universe. Alexander Luthor reunites Earth-Two Superman with his Lois Lane, then takes the two of them and Superboy-Prime into a pocket universe inside himself. Wonder Woman didn’t die and was, in fact, sent back through time to become the clay she’d be born of. Zeus invites Earth-Two’s Wonder Woman to live out her days on Mount Olympus with her Steve Trevor. On New Earth, the effect of the chemicals that were killing Kid Flash (initially forcing him to quit being Kid Flash during BAPTISM OF BLOOD, 1982) go into remission. Wally becomes the new Flash. A future still exists in which a boy becomes Kamandi, while Jonah Hex slings his guns in a future world gone mad. Harbinger, Lady Quark and Pariah decide to explore their new home together. The Psycho-Pirate is locked in Arkham Asylum and believes himself to be the only one who remembers the Crisis and the multiverse.

He refuses to hand her over to the team, so a band of All-Stars try to talk sense into Robotman, only for it to descent into violence. The Spectre and Thunderbolt combine their powers to bring themselves and the rest of the JSA back together, under the red skies of… Earth-Two? They immediately disrupt an FBI stakeout by rousting a Nazi safehouse, finding Gootsden – the man who launched them into Hyperspace. In New York, Firebrand, Green Lantern and the Shining Knight clash with Mekanique, believing her to be sent by Nazis. She reveals she’s from the future convinces the heroes to save a girl from a car accident in Manhattan. The All-Stars return to the Perisphere and reunite with the JSA. Johnny Quick takes a photo of all the heroes together. Later, under some duress from Robotman, Mekanique is revealed to have been built by a man named Rotwang to travel back in time and hold off the effects of the Crisis back, delaying the changes to New Earth, circa 1942. She erases Robotman’s memory of this. Johnny Quick presents the photo of the Squadron to President Franklin Roosevelt, though the image no longer includes Aquaman, Batman, Robin, Superman and Wonder Woman who have now been replaced with the Freedom Fighters, with the events of the Crisis on Infinite Earths having taken effect.

  1. Mate!!! Talk about comprehensive!!! I honestly had no idea Crisis was so wide spread and appeared in so many other books outside the main series! You are to be commended for this Herculean effort 👏👏👏👏

    1. Cheers for taking a look, Scrubs!
Bit of a task, this one, but I’m glad it’s done! This was my fourth read-through of CoIE and ended up being the most fun I had with the story!
