Years ago, Pariah warned that the multiverse would face a crisis, following the loss of his world. And he was immediately proven right as multiple universe were lost in a war between the heroes of the multiverse and the Anti-Monitor (CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, 1985-1986). Soon after, the Great Darkness flooded over the world, threatening to consume it. It took a host of sorcerers and the Swamp Thing to end this almost intangible threat (during A MURDER OF CROWS, 1986). More recently, the Flash (Barry Allen) was lost in the multiverse (during INFINITE FRONTIER INCARNATE, 2012). Deathstroke’s efforts to play a more heroic role in the world ended in him leading the planet’s most dangerous villains (THE LAZARUS TOURNAMENT, 2021-2022) before he promised to take out his rage on the world’s greatest heroes (SHADOW WAR, 2022). The Great Darkness was revealed to have returned (THE GOLD LANTERN SAGA, 2022). And the Justice League Incarnate have been making a desperate bid to save Barry Allen, only to discover an even darker menace to the entire multiverse in the form of Pariah and his Dark Army, resulting in the death of the Justice League (ROAD TO DARK CRISIS, 2022). What will the world do now that the Justice League have gone, but Pariah’s plans loom on the horizon?
Originally referred to as ‘Dark Crisis’, this event leads into 2023’s line-wide DAWN OF DC which saw numerous new first issues and offered readers a more familiar DC Universe, with many characters returning to their roots. Not only does Dark Crisis have a major impact on DC’s multiverse, it also moves characters forward by positioning a team other than the Justice League as the major players of the DCU. The events that follow – including LAZARUS PLANET, KNIGHT TERRORS and BEAST WORLD all lead into the next universe-reshuffling epic, ABSOLUTE POWER!
