Hulk Reading Order: Mister Fixit/The Professor (1987-1992)

Get ready! This reading order covers the first five years of Hulk history by the absolute master of the Green/Grey Goliath’s saga!

Time and time again, I’ve sung the praises of Peter David’s epic run on Incredible Hulk. Peter took over the title when sales were at an all-time low and literally no one else wanted to write the series. Four years later, the title had become a regular in the top ten comics charts and was winning awards and critical acclaim. It also completely won me over as a reader. Not only is this my favourite Hulk run, I think it’s my favourite run by any writer on any Marvel Comics series.

Peter David is often credited with bringing back the grey incarnation of the Hulk and with introducing the concept of Bruce Banner‘s abusive father, but those elements were added at the end of Bill Mantlo’s time on the series. Peter himself takes no credit for either of those events, but he did take those concepts and expand on them, adding more layers to the Hulk mythos than ever before.

Now, I’ll admit, the initial issues aren’t necessarily the strongest. Peter picked up a number of Al Milgrom’s dangling plot threads after he left the title. But it starts moving in the right direction when the Hulk has his first rematch with Wolverine (as drawn by Todd McFarlane in #330-345). Jeff Purves provides the art when the Hulk becomes an enforcer in Las Vegad (#347-361) before Dale Keown hops on as regular artist (#367-398), ihelping Peter David redefine the Hulk and bring the series to a whole new level of incredible. And he’s followed by a whole host of artistic talent – Gary Frank (#403-425), Mike Deodato (#447-453) & Adam Kubert (#454-467) to name a few –  who jump aboard before the ten year run comes to a suitably emotional conclusion.
