The X-Men go through numerous upheavals in this era. Following a brief relocation to the Bermuda Triangle, the X-Men’s unexpected Alien-inspired space saga with the Brood leads to the birth of a brand-new team of trainee mutants moving into the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. A villain joins the team just as Cyclops introduces the new woman in his life (who looks suspiciously like the recently-deceased Jean Grey). A member of the X-Men loses their powers, another new member arrives from the future and the New Mutants add more young members, including the rapidly-aged Magik, the tech-alien Warlock and redshirt Doug Ramsey! Plus, Magneto’s standing with the X-Men takes a considerable turn when they – along with numerous other heroes and villains – are forced to fight in the SECRET WARS (1984-1985). All of which sets up the next six or seven years-worth of stories by Chris Claremont!
‘All-New, All-Different X-Men’ artist Dave Cockrum returns for a stint, followed by Brent Anderson, Michael Golden, Bob McLeod, John Romita Jr, Bill Sienkiewicz, Paul Smith and more on Uncanny X-Men and New Mutants and their annuals provide career and character-defining work, making the early ’80s one of the most exciting times to be reading X-Men!
