The final instalment of Jim Starlin’s Infinity Trilogy. Thanos gained god-like powers, only to be opposed by Adam Warlock in THE INFINITY GAUNTLET (1991-1992). While in possession of the Infinity Gauntlet, Warlock freed his very being of ‘good and evil’, only for both to manifest physically. His ‘evil’ aspect took the form of the Magus, leading into THE INFINITY WAR (1992). Now, the Marvel Universe faces the threat of Warlock’s ‘good side’ in the final instalment of Jim Starlin‘s Infinity Trilogy…
Like the first two epic crossovers, there are appearances from just about every major Marvel character at the time, but the real stars of the show are Thanos and Warlock. Don’t expect that to stop Marvel’s poorest-selling titles from desperately attempting to cling onto the Infinity Liferaft. The fact that most of those titles were still cancelled a couple of months later showed that not even the summer event crossover of the year could save them.
It’s a shame that the final chapter doesn’t come close to the original or even the sequel. Warlock’s good side – who calls herself the Goddess – recruits half the heroes in the Marvel Universe to her cause, resulting in an ideological (or probably more theological) split in the cast of characters. What could have been an more interesting metaphorical exploration of religion ends up being a bit of a mindless slugfest with the Goddess’ followers becoming little more than mindless pawns.
