While there appear to be far too many comic fans who can only gripe and complain about the medium to the point where they’re likely putting off potential new readers (even the term “because comics” rubs me up the wrong way, like a two-word apology for all comics being dumb or just plain crap), there are some stories that unify both positive and negative fans for their questionable direction. ONE MORE DAY (2007-2008) was one such story. In an attempt to freshen Spider-Man up and make him more accessible, Marvel Comics Editor in Chief Joe Quesada thought a literal deal with the devil would justify the nullification of Peter Parker‘s marriage and free the Web-Slinger up for new stories that would make him feel young and relatable again.
While there are few who profess to like ‘One More Day’, the new Spidey era dubbed ‘Brand New Day’ did give a number of fans a jumping-on point. Personally, I struggled with this new direction. A time-jump allowed the rotating creatie teams – including writers Bob Gale, Marc Guggenheim, Dan Slott & Zeb Wells – on the Amazing Spider-Man title a chance to build mystery and bring in new characters, Brand New Day betrayed the ‘dead is dead’ mantra Marvel was running with at the time by inexplicably restoring Harry Osborn to life. Peter Parker was back to struggling with money, his secret identity (made public during CIVIL WAR, 2006-2007) was back in the bag, his organic web-shootings powers are gone and Mary Jane Watson was largely out of the picture. I didn’t care for the mystery, I wasn’t a fan of resurrections and Peter’s continuity seemingly being erased felt like a slap in the face. Despite disliking Mary Jane from the get go, this wasn’t the way to handle the situation.
Though very few of the new villains he’d end up facing would have any lasting impact – aside from Mister Negative, of course – writer Dan Slott would prove himself more than capable of handling the adventures of Spider-Man when he’d become the sole scribe three years later during Spidey’s next jumping-on point, BIG TIME (2011).
Themed event: Brand New Day is more of a line-wide relaunch than a crossover, though the storylines from this era run through more than just the main Amazing Spider-Man title; the Ms Marvel Annual has been included due to it being the first major appearance of Spider-Man following One More Day.

Spider-Man’s constant flirting with Ms Marvel feels uncomfortable when we’re so used to him being married. The robots merge into one giant SCAVENGER which Ms Marvel tackles alone while Spidey discovers a bunch of Stuart Cavenger androids the real Cavenger uploaded aspects of his personality into. The Stuart of Destruction created the SCAVENGER tech, so Spidey removes his head and escapes before Ms Marvel can take him into custody. | |
