Avengers Disassembled (2004-2005) Reading Order

The big Avengers shake-up of 2004 ended up having a pretty profound impact on the Marvel Universe as a whole. The publisher’s aim was to make Earth’s Mightiest Heroes exciting again to match the popularity of the Ultimates (their Ultimate Universe counterparts) by putting writer Brian Michael Bendis at the helm and tearing the classic team apart; making room for the ‘New Avengers’, and adding giving the team an all-star line-up (during BREAKOUT, 2005).

Marvel had moved away from mega-events for a few years, making Avengers Disassembled feel a little more special, though it would lead to further – sometimes even larger – mega-events like HOUSE OF M, CIVIL WAR, SECRET INVASION (2008-2009) and SIEGE.

For the most part, the tie-ins have little impact on the ‘disassembling’ of the Avengers. Iron Man‘s prologue story is largely redundant while the aftermath tale just focuses on putting Tony Stark‘s secret identity back in place. Spider-Man‘s tie-ins are designed to align with the version of Spidey from the Tobey Maguire films, but has almost nothing to do with the end of the Avengers. It could be argued that it reminds Captain America that the web-slinger is a worthy ally, which comes into play later. Thor‘s story features some major disassembling and removes Thor from the board for some time, prompting Cap and Iron Man to seek new allies.

Major event: With a primary mini-series and numerous related tie-ins, Avengers Disassembled is considered to be one of the biggest events in the history of the Marvel Universe.
