Before LEGENDS begins, the origins of the Batman continue! The ‘Bat-Family’ expands as the Dark Knight gains a sidekick in Robin, inspires Batgirl to take up the cowl and meets the deadly Huntress. And the Batman spreads his wings as he meets Superman, becomes a recurring member of the Justice League and first encounters Jason Todd!
The Dark Knight’s career continues as Batman’s New Earth continuity heads towards the original post-CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS continuity. Many of these stories were released long after the 1985/66 event in an effort to explain the character’s new history.
A huge thank you to DCU Guide, Comics Back Issues and the mammoth efforts of the Batman Chronology Project for their assistance in assembling this reading order.
Some stories – such as Full Circle – were later considered to be outside of accepted mainstream continuity, as well as a number of other ‘untold tales’ like the JLA Incarnations mini-series and the SILVER AGE event which contain continuity discrepancies. However, I’ve included them so that you can see roughly where they used to fit and decide for yourself if you want to read them.
SCROLL DOWN to the bottom for the KEY COLLECTED EDITIONS for this event!
Must Reads: Story arcs marked with a ✔ are must-read stories from this time period, along with any key related stories and often-forgotten tales that are worth a read.
Chronology: Every appearance of Batman from this period is included in chronological order, mapping out their timeline rather than just the order the issues were released.
Anthology Issues: When an issue contains multiple stories, the relevant story is denoted with square brackets. For example, [2/5] refers to the second story of the five stories in that issue, so you don’t need to read the other four.
First Appearances: Many characters’ first appearances will actually be a reference to their debut following the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ event; all first appearances refer to the characters’ debut in the New Earth continuity.
