Batman Reading Order: Origins – Year One to The Long Halloween

The Batman begins! Bruce Wayne returns from his training, ready to take on crime on the dangerous streets of Gotham City. Bruce initially finds himself facing everything from street thugs to organized crime. But it’s not long before he’s up against a whole new breed of criminal in the form of Catwoman, Hugo Strange, the Joker, Poison Ivy, the Riddler, Scarecrow, Man-Bat, Mister Freeze and Two-Face.

The first three years of the Dark Knight’s career as Batman’s New Earth continuity begins following the universe-altering events of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS. Many of these stories were released long after the 1985/66 event in an effort to explain the character’s new history. A huge thank you to DCU Guide, Comics Back Issues and the mammoth efforts of the Batman Chronology Project for their assistance in assembling this reading order.

Some stories – such as Batman: Year Two and Snow – were later considered to be outside of accepted mainstream continuity, but I’ve included them so that you can see roughly where they used to fit and decide for yourself if you want to read them.

SCROLL DOWN to the bottom for the KEY COLLECTED EDITIONS for this event!

Must Reads: Story arcs marked with a ✔ are must-read stories from this time period, along with any key related stories and often-forgotten tales that are worth a read.

Chronology: Every appearance of Batman from this period is included in chronological order, mapping out their timeline rather than just the order the issues were released.

Anthology Issues: When an issue contains multiple stories, the relevant story is denoted with square brackets. For example, [2/5] refers to the second story of the five stories in that issue, so you don’t need to read the other four.

First Appearances: Many characters’ first appearances will actually be a reference to their debut following the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ event; all first appearances refer to the characters’ debut in the New Earth continuity.

Want to keep it simple? Here’s the core reading order without story descriptions, page-by-page breakdowns – just the stories:
