Armor Wars (1987-1988) Reading Order

Tony Stark finds out his technology is being stolen and used by everyone from the US military to super-criminals. In a one-man war to take back what’s rightfully his, Iron Man will fall out with just about everyone from Steve Rogers to the his team, the West Coast Avengers

This story was originally called ‘Stark Wars’ when it first ran in the late ’80s, however the house ads that promoted the event before it began referred to it as the ‘Armor Wars’. This became such a pivotal moment in Tony Stark’s history that it was one of the few Iron Man stories to be collected in trade paperback in the early 1990s. Marvel Comics opted to use the name ‘Armor Wars’ for that collect and almost every collection since as they figured ‘Stark Wars’ wouldn’t mean much to the average person in a book ship at a time when Tony Stark had yet to become a household name! Plus, editors believe it sounded cooler! But you’ll also see it referred to as Stark Wars in the Epic Collections paperback line, so hey… you call it what you think sounds best!

For an in-depth look at the story, listen to our Omniverse Book Club episode focussed solely on Armor Wars!

Crossover: This is an 8-part ‘Iron Man’ storyline which bleeds into certain issues of ‘Captain America’ and a momentary confrontation in ‘West Coast Avengers’, making it a crossover by default.
