Ghost Rider Reading Order, 1990-1993: Danny Ketch

After Johnny Blaze freed himself from the demon Zarathos and the curse of the Ghost Rider, the Marvel Universe was short on Spirits of Vengeance for a few years. Then came the launch of a slew of new (and, in some cases, familiar) “Heroes for the ’90s” titles over the first few months of 1990. Among them was a brand-new Ghost Rider with a brand-new host, Danny Ketch. This incarnation brought plenty of mystery along for the ride, leaving readers wondering if this Spirit of Vengeance had any connection to Zarathos. He also brought new abilities, a new mythos and he dragged Johnny Blaze kicking and screaming into the ’90s, too, when the former host took it upon himself to track down and destroy this apparent threat to society…

It wouldn’t be long before Blaze would regularly find himself teaming up with Danny Ketch/Ghost Rider and the popularity of the new series would inspire a number of spin-off titles under the ‘Midnight Sons‘ banner (see our Midnight Sons Reading Order for more).

I’d like to thank the Unofficial Handbook of Marvel Comics Creators, the Marvel Chronology Project, the Marvel Database and the Appendix to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe for their invaluable assistance!

Must Reads: Story arcs marked with a ✔ are must-read stories from this time period, along with any key related stories and often-forgotten tales that are worth a read.

Chronology: All appearances of the Ghost Rider, Danny Ketch and Johnny Blaze from this period are included in chronological order, laying out their timeline rather than just the order the issues were released.

Anthology Issues: When an issue contains multiple stories, the relevant story is denoted with square brackets. For example, [2/5] refers to the second story of the five stories in that issue, so you don’t need to read the other four.

  1. Hey guys. When are you planning on continuing your Marvel Universe Reading Order you were doing Marve Comics Guide website?

    1. Yes indeed we are! I’m working up a new version of the Marvel Universe 2004 Reading Order as we speak and will continue to add each year, after. There may be a little time-hopping as I’m a huge ’80s Marvel fan, so expect to see 1983 upwards covered as well. Fingers crossed I’ll get a chance to do the rest, too!

    2. (It’s not letting me reply to your original post for some reason, but…) I’ve had a few bits to sort behind the scenes, but I want to get it on here in the next couple of months!
