Everything that’s been building since the RISE OF THE MIDNIGHT SONS (1992) comes to a head with SIEGE OF DARKNESS (1994-1995). Promo materials announced the event would be the dawn of a new era for the Midnight Sons. Instead it signalled an end that would drag out for some time to come.
Doctor Strange joins the cast as they go through some major changes. Ghost Rider is temporarily replaced by Vengeance. The Darkhold Redeemers‘ mission comes to a close with a surprising revelation. And Morbius‘ efforts to control his bloodlust would alter… slightly.
The line of Midnight Sons titles changes soon after the Siege. Blade becomes a solo act. John Blaze goes a similar route, searching for his kids without Ghost Rider. And Vengeance takes a regular slot in Marvel Comics Presents that left a lot to be desired. But with no overarching link between the titles aside from the supernatural slant, the Midnight Sons just fizzle out. The covers lose the dagger logo before the end of 1994 and the majority of the titles are cancelled. Only Doctor Strange and Ghost Rider survive into 1995’s Marvel Edge line that basically lumps the characters that aren’t X-Men, Avengers or Spider-Man-related as Marvel’s ‘darker’ or ‘street-level’ stories.
