After just over two years, the threads from the New 52 era Earth 2 series and sister title Worlds’ Finest come to an apocalyptic ending! The heroes of Earth 2 made the ultimate sacrifice to eject the forces of Apokolips from their home world (during THE GATHERING, 2012-2013). But the years of peace were broken as Darkseid‘s influence returned and new heroes were granted the power to oppose them. With new incarnations of characters based on the original Earth-Two, the Green Lantern (Alan Scott), the Flash (Jay Garrick), Doctor Fate, Hawkgirl and others become the new Wonders of the World and stood against the minions of the most-feared menace in the cosmos.
With writer James Robinson kicking the series off before the torch was passed to the king of the DC Multiverse, Tom Taylor, the stage was set for a climactic battle for Earth in a version of the DC Universe we’d never seen before. Adding a brand new Superman and Batman to the mix only raised the stakes even higher, but the WORLD’S END event didn’t pack that same world-building energy as a team of writers took over the book, wrapping up the saga in the 26-issue Earth 2: World’s End title that was crammed into just six months.
Hunteress and Power Girl also returned to their home reality to join the final fight, though their Worlds’ Finest and the regular Earth 2 book were relegated to secondary tie-in stories while World’s End powered through to the climax. Add in the bizarre and unnecessary Constantine issues that are shoehorned into this event for some reason and you have to seriously question some of the editorial decisions, here.
The characters from Earth 2 can be followed into the equally questionable CONVERGENCE (2015) event before being given another shot at an ongoing series of their own under the far-more reliable pen of Dan Abnett. I haven’t made it that far, yet, but I’m hoping to see a return to glory for the Wonders of the World before their final bow…
