Marvel Knights 2099 (2004) Reading Order

The Marvel Knights line launched in 1998 so, to celebrate its fifth anniversary (OK, sixth, but go with it), the editors who revamped Daredevil, the Black Panther, the Inhumans and the Punisher jump 100 years into the future to see what these characters are iup to in the year 2099. And it’s all brought to you by The Walking Dead‘s Robert Kirkman!

Instead of setting the tale in the pre-established Earth-928 that previously starred future versions of Spider-ManDoomRavage and the Punisher, the five one-shots are set in a whole new dystopian future. In this timeline of Earth-2992, the Mutant Registration Act outlawed super-beings. The heroes fought for their rights… and lost. Most of them were killed or thrown into prison. Only a handful of outlaw super-humans remain…

Themed Event: These five one-shots were released as part of a ‘fifth week event’ in which Marvel released the books to fill the extra Wedsneday in the month.

Must Reads: Story arcs marked with a ✔are must-read stories. These stories have little impact further down the line, so while no single issue is more ‘important’ than another, it’s up to you to decide whether these standalone one-shots are worth reading at all!

Spoilers: The issue descriptions and fallout section contain spoilers, so be warned!

With the Mutant Registration Act in full-swing, Black Bolt can see that planet Earth isn’t going to welcome his people, the Inhumans. So he puts his loyal subjects in stasis and sends them to the moon. A perfectly rational response. Black Bolt’s deranged brother Maximus wakes up, takes over as ruler of the Inhumans and kills the Inhuman Royal Family, except Black Bolt. When Black Bolt finally wakes from stasis, he goes a little crazy and his scream destroys Attilan and kills Maximus and every other Inhuman.

But Samuel’s wife, Elaine Fisk, becomes frustrated with his hobby and leaves him, taking their son with her.
